The Optus and Elders joint venture, OPEL Networks Pty Ltd (OPEL), has been awarded $958 million in funding from the Australian Government. The $958 million comprises $600 million from the Broadband Connect Infrastructure Program and a further $358 million from the Australian Government. The Broadband Connect Infrastructure Program was established to fund an open access network in rural and regional Australia capable of delivering metro-comparable wholesale broadband services. The OPEL partnership was formed to provide telecommunication services to rural and regional Australia. OPEL will create a competitive wholesale market that will reform the regional telecommunications market enabling retail competition to flourish, empowering consumers and businesses to choose broadband services that suit their particular needs. Through OPEL, retail service providers will be able to deliver accessible, high speed and affordable broadband services to rural and regional Australians comparable to metropolitan services.
