SHITBOX RALLY RETURNS TO NEW ZEALAND IN 2017

Announcement posted by Shitbox Rally New Zealand 21 Apr 2016

Overwhelmed by its inaugural success in New Zealand, James Freeman, founder of Box Rallies, has today announced that Shitbox Rally NZ is returning in February 2017, with registrations open from today for 100 teams to join the challenge. In cars worth less than $1,700 NZD (all road-worthy, registered and insured), Shitbox Rally NZ will take teams through some of the country’s most picturesque and arduous roads, all to raise money for the Cancer Society of New Zealand.

Kicking off in the South Island (Te Waipoinamu), 200 participants will bring a new thunderous element to the mountains as they drive through unforgettable locations in the land of the white clouds, on a 7-day round trip from Christchurch. The rally will start on 25th February 2017 and finishes on 4th March 2017.

Cars will be sourced by Manheim with the Box Rallies team and auctioned off in a private event the day before Shitbox Rally NZ begins, opening up registration for anyone from anywhere to participate. With no need to source your own car, teams can focus on their fundraising and ready themselves for the adventure ahead. The idea is simple – just bid for one of the shitboxes on offer on 24th February 2017 based on your fundraising amount, then take 24 hours to decorate your ride and drive away in your dream shitbox when the convoy leaves on 25th February 2017.

“Many of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another.  Shitbox Rally is a unique way of bringing the community together to combat the cause, raise awareness and support the Cancer Society of NZ. Given the incredible uptake in our first Shitbox Rally NZ, it’s time to announce the next challenge, this time taking to the Southern Alps and valleys of the South Island. The rally brings together like-minded people that otherwise may never meet, in adventure all for a good cause,” says James Freeman.

From natural wildlife and indulgent wineries to glacial valleys and sky-high mountains, the South Island is home to some of the purest scenery in the world. Not only will the teams be greeted by the majestic views, but they will also experience more than a few MacGyver moments, fixing their cars with gaffer tape, laughter and a whole lot of creativity.

The rally is a rewarding adventure for all the dedicated fundraising the participants do for cancer research. Teams must raise a minimum of $4,500 NZD to be in Shitbox Rally NZ.

Registrations are now open for the second Shitbox Rally NZ - it will be the trip of a lifetime for the teams as they discover the wild rugged coastlines and misty mountains of Middle-earth.

ABOUT SHITBOX RALLY NEW ZEALAND
Shitbox Rally NZ is a new adventure for New Zealand, raising much-needed funds for cancer research and awareness.

Like it’s Australian counterpart, Shitbox Rally NZ is not a race but rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable: to drive cars worth less than $1,700 NZD (all roadworthy, registered and insured) through sprawling farmlands, geothermal wonders, ancient redwood forests, glacial valleys, impeding mountains and cosmopolitan cities – from the Bay of Islands to the Misty Mountains of Wanaka, it’s the stuff of Tolkien legend.
Manheim sources all of the vehicles used in the rally on behalf of the teams, who bid on them in an event the day before the rally starts. To qualify for the Shitbox Rally NZ, supporters need to raise a minimum of $4,500 NZD.

James Freeman founded the Shitbox Rally after he lost both his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other. Since it’s inception in 2010 this event has raised over $6.4 million AUD for cancer research, making the rally the largest independent fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

A new venture for New Zealand, Shitbox Rally NZ has partnered with the Cancer Society of New Zealand to replicate the Australian success and be an important contributor to their cancer research and awareness initiatives.
