CA and Interact join BSAA in fight against software piracy

Announcement posted by Business Software Association of Australia (BSAA) 23 Sep 2002

The Business Software Association of Australia (BSAA) has extended itsrepresentation and reach in thesoftware Australian market, announcing today thatComputer Associates and Interact Commerce Corporation have joined the BSAA as Associate Members.

The companieswill support the BSAA's activities in education, management assistance and litigationto reduce Australia's software piracy rate, which the BSAA says is still higher than other developed markets despite reductions in recent years.

The BSAA now represents the interests ofnineleading softwarevendors in Australia - Adobe, Autodesk,Computer Associates, Interact Commerce Corporation, Macromedia, Microsoft, Symantec, Filemaker and Checkmark Technologies.

BSAA Chairman, Jim Macnamara, said the addition ofComputer Associates and Interact to BSAA membershipis a sign of the seriousness of software piracy to the IT sector.

"The broadening BSAA membership willextend its focus in the high-end business sector as well as Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the general PC market. Illegal software use occurs at all levels, largely through lack of management attention to intellectual property assets and sometimes through deliberate breaches of licensing," he said.

Mr Macnamara said that BSAA membership was open to other software vendors including small Australian developers. "The BSAA has introduced aspecial Associate Member level for vendors with less than four employees toallow small local developers to be represented without significant cost.

"Small developers can suffer proportionately the same or even greater losses through illegal copying and use of software and they usually ill-equipped and resourced to defend their copyright. Hence, the BSAA's campaign is in the interests of local software developers and local distributors and retailers as well as international software vendors.

The BSAA totally rejects the notion that software piracy is a victimless crime or that it doesn't hurt the local economy," Mr Macnamara said.
