Piquant Catering Queensland dazzles international clients during Commonwealth Games

Piquant Catering Queensland is set to achieve record heights this year after serving up 21,000 meals for NEP, the official 2018 Commonwealth Games host broadcaster.

Piquant outshone competition to secure the massive Commonwealth Games catering deal which saw the 50-strong team cook up 1.5 tonne of chicken and a total of 800 kilograms of rice and vegetables over 17 days – all at their Coomera production kitchen within the Riviera building.

“It was exceptionally challenging to produce 1,200 high quality meals a day and then ensure delivery to NEP crew members who were working across 11 venues,” said Sarah Brenac, Piquant Catering Queensland’s Director of Food and Beverage.

“It was made even more intense because of those 1,200 crew, a staggering 250 of them had specialty dietary requirements ranging from Halal to Pescatarian to Gluten Free.

“Thanks to the Commonwealth Games we’ve now really established ourselves in Queensland and cemented the fact that we can cater for such large volumes under intense pressure.”

Piquant Catering Queensland competed against a number of international companies and showed just the right amount of perseverance to land the gig, which took a year’s worth of hard preparation to get right during the Games.

“While there were some teething problems for the first couple of days, we ironed those out and showed we could adapt to changes when needed,” said Sarah.

“For example, on the venue’s crew decided overnight that they wanted a change in menu and we managed to respond to their request without an issue.”

Piquant Catering started out as a small family business in Sydney 15 years ago by Carl and Justine Nicholls and decided to team up with Sarah on the Gold Coast exactly two years ago, the team has already dazzled other big clientele synonymous with class and style including Porsche, McLaren, Aston Martin and Marcs.

“The message from the Commonwealth Games experience was loud and clear – people loved our food and service,” said Sarah.

“We believe the Games is just the start - we are certainly looking for more big opportunities."

The wedding season is next on the agenda for Piquant Catering Queensland and the team is looking good to set a new personal best.
