Mures Upper Deck Welcomes New Head Chef Markella Koutalidi

[Hobart, Tasmania, 26 July 2018] Mures Tasmania is pleased to announce the appointment of Markella Koutalidi to succeed Eugene Burgo as Head Chef of Mures Upper Deck. Eugene is returning to his home state of Victoria after successfully leading the Upper Deck kitchen for many years. He and Markella will continue to collaborate in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth and seamless experience for guests and the team.

A well-travelled chef, Markella will bring a dynamic, innovative energy to this iconic Tasmanian restaurant.

Markella brings over 10 years of culinary experience from around the world. Originally from Greece, Markella has held previous positions in Michelin Star restaurants Pétrus (England) - owned by Gordon Ramsey, The Fat Duck (England) – run by chef proprietor Heston Blumenthal and Spondi (Greece). Prior to joining the team at Mures Upper Deck, Markella served as the Senior Sous Chef at The Source Restaurant - MONA, where she developed a strong foundation of the local and seasonal ingredients in a la carte and degustation menus. 

On her move to Mures Upper Deck, Markella said, “I love cooking with fresh ingredients and the seafood that is available all year round here in Tasmania is amongst the best in the world.” At Mures Upper Deck Markella looks forward to further exploring her creativity in seafood, and is enthusiastic about the challenge ahead - “I am excited to provide guests with the best that Tasmania has to offer.”

Commenting on Markella’s appointment, Will Mure, Director, stated: “Markella is talented with years of experience and a great appreciation of what it takes to deliver excellence to our guests. I know she will continue to build on the strong foundation that has been set by Eugene.

Mures Upper Deck is located on Victoria Dock, and is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11am.
