Case study: One stop for grocery shop security

Announcement posted by Write Away Communication 21 Jun 2010

With a range of concealable high-value stock and family necessities such as razors, baby food and batteries, as well as everyday items, independent grocery stores are especially vulnerable to theft.

IGA Allambie Heightsowner Andrew Braywas increasingly concerned about the level of product shrinkage at his store and its impact on profits. After assessing his options, he decided to upgrade his existing security system.

Following comprehensive research and discussions with a number of security vendors, Bray selected ADT Security to assist him with developing a customised solution which integrated intruder alarms, remote monitoring, closed circuit television (CCTV) and electronic article surveillance (EAS).

“It made sense to have a single security platform and ADT Security provided a one stop solution,” said Bray.

To address shoplifting, ADT Security recommended Sensormatic anti-theft labels be placed on high-value, high-risk items. Utilising acousto-magnetic technology, the labels offer superior detection rates with a very low level of false alarms and are effective on a wide variety of products, including those with foil packaging.

To maximise space at the busy checkout area, ADT Security installed Sensormatic Ultra Exit pedestals which can protect an opening of 2.4 metres with just two pedestals - unlike other systems which may require pedestals at each individual checkout to cover the same distance. The Ultra Exit pedestals also have the benefit of providing helpful information about customer numbers at different times of the day via an integrated people counting feature. This assists Bray in allocating staff resources and analysing sales patterns.

The security solution implemented at IGA Allambie Heights also includes a Closed Circuit TV system with 15 indoor dome cameras located in the sales area, delivery dock, aisles and deli area. An external vandal resistant dome is positioned at the shop entry. As well as being recorded, images are displayed on a public view monitor to deter would-be thieves. This monitor can also overlay text, giving Andrew the opportunity to increase sales of weekly specials and generate additional revenue from advertisers.

Deterring and detecting thieves day and night, ADT Security also provides IGA Allambie Heights with 24 hour alarm monitoring. If an alarm activates, ADT Security personnel will respond promptly, making the store a tough challenge for criminals. In planning the upgrade, ADT Security worked closely with Bray to incorporate existing alarms, resulting in reduced installation costs.

One of the advantages of ADT Security systems is the forward-backward compatibility built into most products and systems. ADT Security can also arrange periodic maintenance of all components so that the system always responds as designed.

According to Andrew Bray, the upgrade has been a success.

“I wanted to better manage the business and knew that upgrading the store’s security systems would be a step in the right direction.

“Just having the new system in place is an effective visual deterrent for shoplifters. I’ve already noticed subtle changes in customer behaviour as they notice the security cameras and pedestals. The new system is also proving to be a fantastic management tool, providing me with valuable data to make important decisions about the way I manage the business.”
