43 Per Cent of Enterprise Decision-makers Plan to Run Majority of Business Applications over the Internet in 2015

Akamai-sponsored Study Highlights Cloud Adoption Strategies, Current BYOD Demands

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimising and securing online content and business applications, today released research that shows companies are increasingly transitioning to delivering and consuming business applications via the Internet. Although 50 per cent of respondents report running less than 20 per cent of their business applications over the Internet today, 43 per cent expect to deliver the majority of their applications over the Internet in the next year.

The "Trends in Application Delivery Strategies" survey, which was conducted by Gatepoint Research on Akamai's behalf earlier this year, polled 350 enterprise IT decision makers. A majority (65 per cent) of respondents hold high-level management positions in Fortune 1000 companies and participants hailed from a variety of industries, including business and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, telecommunications and transportation. Nearly half (46 per cent) of respondents represent global enterprises, with more than one-fifth of users operating outside of the U.S.

In addition to providing insight into how quickly enterprises plan to move applications to the Internet, the survey also highlights related concerns. For example, security remains the top concern for respondents (87 per cent). Further, 66 per cent worry about performance and 45 per cent are concerned about reliability.

"Trends such as globalisation, telecommuting and mobility continue to drive the shift to Internet-delivered applications, and enterprises today are working hard to keep up," said Mike Afergan, senior vice president and general manager, Web Experience Business Unit, Akamai. "These survey results reinforce the demand for technology that provides greater security, reliability and speed for their business critical web applications. And as IT decision makers continue to look for ways to maximise the benefits of Internet application delivery, they want access to complementary solutions, such as those delivered by Akamai, that enable improved, global access to information and, ultimately, greater productivity."

Additional findings from the "Trends in Application Delivery Strategies" survey include:

·       The most common applications currently running over the Internet are: websites and web applications (71 per cent), email services (57 per cent), content and collaboration sites and portals (51 per cent), mobile or mobile web back-end apps (46 per cent), and e-Learning (47 per cent)

·       In terms of planned investment, big data is the primary focus for respondents, with 55 per cent saying it's their top area of investment in 2014

·       Other key areas of investment in 2014 for respondents include: mobile or mobile web back-end apps (39 per cent), websites or web applications (34 per cent), content and collaboration sites and portals (34 per cent), disaster recovery and backup services (26 per cent), and customer relationship management (CRM) (28 per cent)

"Whether it's facilitating global collaboration, making any number of business critical applications available to employees independent of location or device, or transmitting big data sets around the world, enterprises are turning to the Internet to make it happen," continued Afergan. "Our Web Performance and Web Security Solutions are being used every day to help enterprises engage customers and employees with highly performing, personalised online experiences that are intended to increase productivity, grow revenue and reduce costs."
