Wormald introduces environmentally sensitive Fluorine Free Foam

Announcement posted by Wormald 23 Apr 2018

Wormald has proactively introduced environmentally sensitive Fluorine Free Foam in its Foam Fire extinguishers and Vehicle Fire Suppression Systems, addressing concerns about the environmental impact of Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFFs).

Wormald’s pre-engineered Fluorine Free Foam, a new Wormald foam concentrate, has been approved by Global-Mark, and meets the performance requirements of the revised Australian Standard for vehicle fire protection AS5062 – 2016.

“The new Fluorine Free Foam product performs very effectively, maintaining a high standard for firefighting. It is an environmentally sensitive option that can be used for existing Wormald products,” explained Justin Morris, Technical Director at Wormald.

AFFFs are water-based firefighting foam products used to rapidly suppress flammable liquid fires by cooling the fire and coating the fuel, preventing contact with oxygen, and have been used around the world since the 1970s. Many have included fluorinated surfactants such as PFOA and PFOS, which are part of a broader group of chemicals called PFAS substances.

Fluorine Free Foams avoid the persistent, bio-accumulative and potentially adverse effects that AFFFs containing fluorine can pose and can be discharged without the need for containment and disposal.

Wormald’s new concentrate complies with Queensland’s Fire Fighting Foam policy announced in 2016 by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, which bans the use of fluorine.  Full compliance is to be implemented by no later than 6 July 2019.

“The Fluorine Free Foam is part of our on-going commitment to delivering high quality firefighting products to the Australian market. Wormald will continue to develop solutions for customers who are looking to be more environmentally responsible when it comes to the firefighting solutions they use and store on their sites,” commented Mr Morris.
